Paradiso hosted a tribute revue show to Boyd Small who was taken from us too early. I designed the posters and a teeshirt, showing him as if he is getting his drumkot ready for the upcoming gig.

  • Poster - Boyd Small Tribute

Too early, Boyd was taken from us. His friends organised a show in Paradiso playing the maestro’s songs one more time. i made the poster for the event, showing Boyd as if he’s preparing his drumset for the upcoming gig. I owe him big time.

  • So Easy

‘So Easy’ is an album by Boyd Small. I designed the cover and did the illustrations. It’s inspired by the idea of buying a bottle in a brown sack. I made the illustrations look like pulp magazine advertisements.

  • Record sleeve - So Easy

For Boyd Small’s album ‘So Easy’ we made a ‘brown bag’ (as seen around bottles of alcohol) cover with only typography on it. Inside the design looks quite a bit like a 50’s pulp mag, including advertisements on how to play guitar in just three days. (one chord per day)

  • identity related - illustrations for ‘So Easy’

illustrations for ‘So Easy’ by Boyd Small. I did the album design with the association in mind of ‘buying dirty magazines in a brown bag’. So the lyrics inside had these drawings, that resemble ’60s cheesy advertisements in pulp magazines.

  • This Time No Lies

‘This Time No Lies’ is the first album i designed for Boyd Small. Photographer Tza Tza and i got the key to our favorite night bar to make the photo’s for this, and Boyd actually did write this part of a lyric on a beer mat right there.

  • Record sleeve - this time no lies

Blues singer Boyd Small asked me to do his cover art. I asked photographer Susan ArbabZadeh to make this picture in the cafe we frequently visited: ‘De Diepte’. The owner was kind enough to give us the keys and let us make these pictures here. I asked Boyd to write some lyric on a beermat, as if he was writing them in the bar and this picture started the practical joke of never showing his face on his covers.

  • Diamond Boy

Design for an album by Boyd Small. Te sound wave in the background is of one of the songs on the record, I forgot which one.

  • Record sleeve - diamond boy

For this album, Boyd asked me if he could be portrayed with his car. ‘Of course’ I thought – but maintained the running gag to not show his head on his covers.

  • Four + One

Four + one by Boyd Small. We had as a running gag that we would never see Boyd’s face on the record. In this case, the story of the cover seems to be about a girl having torn a photo portrait of the singer in four pieces and thrown in a puddle of water in the gutter. Of course, these are all ‘Blues’ metaphores but the fun part is that when you buy the record, you can unfold the cover and actually see his face: the four pieces are neatly together and his face is clearly recognisable: 4 + 1!

  • Record sleeve - 4+1

We thought we’d do a real ‘blues’ cover for this one. Boyd’s photo is torn in four pieces and left in a puddle. Again, we don’t see his face but we see the girl who’s leaving him. Photos by Annuska Steixner and the model is Ama Badu.
